The English language arts initiative provides self-paced research-based modules that emphasize the most current body of evidence on the science of reading and include a collection of tools to design, differentiate, and deliver intentional reading instruction and methods for all educators to gain the necessary knowledge needed to increase student achievement. Virtual, module-aligned professional development focused on high-leverage practices provides literacy instruction and family engagement to support the achievement of literacy goals and standards for your students.

#306194 SES-PCG: ELA Online Learning Series: Developing Strong Literacy Skills in Grades 4-8

In partnership with the Alabama State Department of Education-Special Education Services, Public Consulting Group is providing six, online modules designed specifically for educators who support students with disabilities in grades 4–8. The learning series, Developing Strong Literacy Skills in Grades 4–8, provides the research, skills, strategies, and explicit instruction teachers need to support students’ acquisition of language, advanced word recognition skills, fluency, vocabulary, and skilled text comprehension. The modules are entirely self-paced and available 24/7. Participants can earn a total of 48 hours by completing all six modules or can earn 8 hours per completed module.

The six modules in this learning series include:

  • Module 1: Understanding the Science of Reading

  • Module 2A: Exploring the Foundations of Adolescent Literacy

  • Module 2B: Building on the Foundations of Adolescent Literacy

  • Module 3: Creating Fluent Readers

  • Module 4: Developing Vocabulary

  • Module 5: Increasing Reading Comprehension

The learning series features:

  • Current research on how the brain learns to read

  • A focus on the needs of the adolescent learner

  • Explicit reading instructional routines

  • Multisensory teaching techniques

  • Corrective procedures to ensure students master skills

  • Effective partner and individual practice

  • Literacy assessment tools and procedures

  • Instructional planning based on assessment results

  • Sample lesson plans

  • Learning from the experts through video and research articles

  • Videos of teaching strategies in practice

  • Downloadable lesson planning templates and instructional strategies
